Regarding Myth #3: Submitting your site to thousands of directories helps...one way I've found to explain to clients the role these directories play is to explain that all web sites fall on a "fame continuum". At the far right are famous sites that no longer need any help (CNN.com), on the far left are brand new sites that nobody has ever heard of that need any legit links they can get. All sites fall somewhere along this contiunuum, and the more a site falls to the far left, the more it may make sense to submit to any given directory. Once a site starts to show the ability to attract links within it's niche, the directories become pointless. There is no site anywhere whose long term success will be impacted or even furthered by virtue of being included in a bunch of directories nobody knows or uses. It is simply a potential tactic that makes sense only for a certain type of site.
